This week’s playlist is to die for

Cabin Fever
A request for Corb Lund sent us to the dark side.

… Well, not literally.

Listener Chris requested that we play “Dig Gravedigger Dig” by Corb Lund and, well… it unintentionally set the tone for the whole show. Only midway through building this week’s playlist did we realize: half of the songs touch on death and dying.

But, don’t worry—there’s plenty of life mixed in, too!

This week, we’ve got brand new and yet-to-be-released tracks by CTZNSHP, Del Bel, Gay Nineties, Shred Kelly, and Thomas D’Arcy. Friday’s playlist will also feature music by The Acorn, All of Your Friends, Balacade, Carbon Dating Service, Constantines, Del Barber, The Details, Express and Company, Hey Rosetta, Hot Panda, King Cobb Steelie, Stars, The Wooden Sky, and The Zolas.

We’ll cover the latest Canadian announcements about SXSW 2015 and talk about upcoming shows in town, including the LIGHTS show happening Saturday night at Emo’s.

Join Justin the Canuck Friday at 4:30 PM for This Great White North: bringing independent Canadian music to Austin, TX every week on 91.7 FM and streaming to the world at KOOP.org.

Win tickets to see LIGHTS

We’ve got three pairs of tickets for LIGHTSperforming with X Ambassadors at Emo’s on February 21—and we want you to win one of them!

LIGHTS
LIGHTS (her legal name since age 18) was born Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Timmins, ON. Now based in Mission, BC, her electro-pop earned her a Juno Award in 2009 for New Artist of the Year. Her latest album, Little Machines, was released late last year.

2015: New year, new music

Sure, 2015 is only a few days old… but that’s no reason for you to have to listen to last year’s music.

This week on This Great White North, we bring you the latest from Canada’s independent music scene, including tracks so new they’ll be released later in 2015. Along the way, we’ll spin some of the latest tunes (and some of our favorites) from 2014, as well. Plus, we’ve got listener requests and a whole slew of fresh Canadian artists never before heard on the show.

So, tune in this Friday at 4:30 PM on KOOP 91.7 FM—or online, worldwide, at KOOP.org—to ring in the new year with 90 minutes of new music. You’ll hear artists like Balacade, Brave Shores, Foxes In Fiction, Glass Random, Marvelous Mark, The Matinee, Megan Landry, Mother Mother, Reef Shark, Viet Cong, and Whitehorse (pictured).

Bundle up for a wintry mix

It may not yet feel like it here in Austin, but winter is fast approaching—and there’s no nation better situated to sing about it than Canada.

The Weakerthans
Look at those coats. The Weakerthans know what winter is.

Join us this Friday at 4:30 PM for a wintry mix—not of snow and rain, but of Canadian songs about the bitter cold, the fluffy snow, the frozen winter, and the mornings spent under warm blankets, not wanting to get out of bed.

We’ll be featuring artists including Said The Whale, Rah Rah, The Zolas, The Weakerthans, Dinosaur Bones, The Acorn, and many more.

So grab a mug of hot cocoa, pull up those thick woolen socks, wrap yourself in a warm blanket, and turn your radio dial to KOOP 91.7 FM. We’ll be broadcasting live, as we do every week, on Friday at 4:30 PM Central. Not near a radio? Tune in online at KOOP.org.
