Join Justin and Simone the Canucks on today’s episode of This Great White North for your chance to win tickets to see Destroyer, Jennifer Castle, and KEN Mode when they come through town next week. We’ll also get you the latest news on upcoming shows in town, including some brand new additions to our concert calendar. Plus, we’ve got new music by West Nile and some favorites from the mid-2000s, like The Lovely Feathers, Meligrove Band, and The Mark Inside.
All that and more is coming up today at 4:30 PM Central on This Great White North, broadcasting independent Canadian music every week on KOOP 91.7 FM in Austin and streaming live online, worldwide, at KOOP.org.
We’ll get this Friday’s show rolling with back-to-back tracks from Blackpaw Society’s brand new album People Doesn’t Care / 1955, an unearthing and reinvention of past musical eras.
After that, some of the latest from the world of independent Canadian music from the likes of Slow Down Molasses, Sun K, Heat, Lost Cousins, Faith Healer, Twin River, Travis Bretzer, Daniel Isaiah, and Adam Hanney & Company.
If you’re looking for a little bit of recent history, we’ve got that, too. We’ll be spinning tracks—some recent, some of an older vintage—by even more artists, including 36?, What If Elephants, Stuck On Planet Earth, The Mark Inside, Years, Controller.Controller, Predator/Prey, The Provincial Archive, Spoon River, and Nathan Lawr & The Minotaurs.
Looking to go a little deeper into this week’s playlist? Check out our interview from January of this year, 5 questions for Blackpaw Society, in which we discuss the band’s name, literary influences, flying under the radar on the Internet, and the practice of rolling around in dead things to hide the scent.

Our show this week is all about the rain… and free tickets. Credit: Miguel Gutierrez Jr.
It’s been a tough week here in Central Texas. We survived hail, lightning, and even tornadoes… only to be inundated with torrents of rain that sent the creeks over their banks and into the streets. We may be in the process of drying out but—as fits the month-long pattern—the forecast calls for yet more rain. There’s just no getting away from it.
Even the Canadian music scene was affected: the storms resulted in the cancellation of not one but twoPurity Ring shows. Bummer.
Fitting with the weather this week, we’ll bring you a show full of Canadian songs about the rain, the floods, the creeks, the rivers, the lakes… and maybe even a little sun. Maybe.
We’ll also have two pairs of tickets to give away to see Great Lake Swimmers and The Weather Station when they come to town on June 16. Will you be one of our lucky winners?
Tune in as we spin tracks by The Acorn, Adam Hanney & Co., Aqua Alta, The Belle Game, CTZNSHP, The Darcys, Del Bel, The Great Outdoors, Hilotrons, Jadea Kelly, Jason Collett, LostCousins, No Gold, Pete Samples, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Sunparlour Players, Western Jaguar, Wintersleep, and The Wooden Sky. We’ll bring you up to date on the weekend forecast, as well as all the (16 and counting!) upcoming Canadian shows in town. Plus, we’ll have news about more ticket giveaways over the next few weeks.

P.S. I’ve been itching to play this track on the show all season but springtime is running out, and there’s just no time for a 6-1/2 minute song on Friday’s show. So, take a listen and enjoy one of my favorite springtime songs, by North Atlantic Explorers:
