Today on the show, we’ve got an assortment of spooky Canadian songs to get you in the Halloween mood, plus coveted guest list spots to see Death from Above 1979. They’ll be playing at Stubb’s on Wednesday night, and we’ll be giving those guest list spots to two lucky listeners.

As always, we’ll have our Neil Young Song of the Week (which, this week, is “Opera Star” from Re-ac-tor) and we’ll also feature a brand new track from John K. Samson’s latest solo album, Winter Wheat, released last Friday.

Join us this Friday as we give away two pairs of tickets to see Islands, playing at Sidewinder on Oct. 14! We’ll focus a big portion of the show on the band and other groups that frontman Nick Thorburn (a.k.a. Nick Diamonds) has been in over the years—including Human Highway, Mister Heavenly, Reefer, and—of course—The Unicorns.

Along with our spotlight on Islands, we’ll also bring you listener requests for Odds and Northey Valenzuela, plus a special Chixdiggit! song for listener Jeff. Rounding out our 90 minutes of independent Canadian music will be new music by Brasstronaut, Elephant Stone, Fresh Snow, Kestrels, and Rococode. Justin the Canuck will be back in the studio after a few weeks away with 90 minutes of Canadian breakup songs–love, loss, and rebuilding. Don’t worry, it’s not all sad! Especially because tucked into all those breakup tunes, we’ll be giving away a pair of tickets to see punk-ish rockers The Dirty Nil play at Sidewinder on Oct. 6.

Our playlist this week will feature breakup tunes by artists including The Acorn, Adam Hanney, Balacade, Crystal Castles, Del Barber, Digits, Gramercy Riffs, and Handsome Furs. Plus, more music by Hayden, Immaculate Machine, Kathleen Edwards, The Michael Parks, Rah Rah, The Ruffled Feathers, Stars, Tangiers, The Weakerthans, and The Zolas. And don’t think our theme will rule out Neil—your weekly routine is intact, as we’ll be playing #54 on the list of the Top 100 Neil Young songs of all time, as judged by Rolling Stone.

Every so often we run a show with music so new, even we don’t know some of the artists.

We’ve got a bevy of new tracks by artists we’ve never played before, including Diamond Mind, Fish Food, Heaven for Real, The Highest Order, and La Fête. Along with these first-timers, we’ve got a playlist bursting with entirely new Canadian music, featuring the latest by Arkells, Beauts, Imaginary Cities, Jane’s Party, Dan Mangan, and Moonface & Siinai. Plus, even more brand new music by Preoccupations (formerly known as Viet Cong), The Provincial Archive, Sidney York, The Tragically Hip, Tuns, Twin River, and White Lung.

We head back to the ’80s for this week’s Neil Young Song of the Week, and we’ll talk about how you can hear The Hip’s final concert—without flying to Toronto.
